Lucinda Randall was the daughter of William Randall and Sarah Gooding, one of the first children in a large family.Birth
From the family bible we know that Lucinda was born in Canada on September 18, 1840. The obituary of her husband, Nathan, in the Waterloo Chronicle-Telegraph in 1903 reports that Lucinda was born in Hamilton. Her younger brother John was born outside Hamilton in Glanford in January 1843, so the crossroads of Glanford may also be where Lucinda was actually born.

Marriage
Lucinda and Nathan Uttley were wed on Nathan's 25th birthday, Wednesday November 25, 1857 in Berlin.
A congregation was formed in 1834 in Berlin by the missionary Rev. Friedrich Wilhelm Bindemann. Their first church, known as the German Protestant Evangelical Church was built on the south side of Church and Queen Streets in 1848 with Rev. Bindemann as the first pastor. The church later became St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
It is our very good fortune that Pastor Bindemann kept good records including the first marriage of Ludwig Weiss in 1852, the marriage of Nathan Uttley and Lucie Randall in 1857 and later Lucinda's younger sister Charlotte to William Linder in 1862. Some of his marriages were performed in his home known as Greenbush but this marriage is identified as "Waterloo Township" which would mean the marriage was performed in the church.

- Nathan Uttley was a sawyer in Woolwich Township which agrees with other sources
- Lucinda prefers to be known as LUCIE because we see the spelling of LUCY corrected in the entry
- Lucie also resided in Woolwich Township when she married which is another strong indication that William Randall and Sarah Gooding were indeed her parents
- There is unidentified writing within parentheses below Lucie's name. Suggestions are welcome.
- The witnesses to the marriage are Samuel Uttley and Mary Flaut (sp?). Samuel is Nathan's brother but who is Mary?
The 1861 Census records Nathan and Lucy Otley with their first two boys, William H. and John R., living in a 1 1/2 story brick house in Woolwich Twp on 1/5 acre. Ten years later Nathan and 'Lusinda' Uttley with six children are still living in Elmira, this time on Factory St.
Death
Nathan and L are listed as the parents when Diana is baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist church in Elmira within a month of her birth as recorded in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Registers, Vol 3 pg 782:
Lucinda was still alive in 1871 after the birth of her seventh child. The county assessments on February 29, 1872 record nine people in the household, up by one from the previous year because of the birth of Diana. Lucinda then must have lived into 1872. Nathan's county assessment for 1873 was filled in two months after those of his brothers and all particulars of the household are left blank. Something had happened. ![]()
Nathan's obituary from the Waterloo Chronicle-Telegraph in October 1903 says that his first wife, Lucinda, had predeceased him 31 years ago. The likely death date for Lucinda is sometime in 1872 and the location would certainly be in Elmira. It remains a mystery that no record of the death can be found in the Ontario Death Indexes, the Waterloo County Deaths for the time and there is no record of a burial in St James' Cemetery where other Uttleys, Girlings and Randalls are found.
We know for certain that Lucinda is not in the picture when Nathan remarries on June 17, 1874.
- The name of Lucinda was carried on in her family. There are four examples that remember her name:
- Lucinda RANDALL, a niece, was born June 9, 1870 to William and Barbara Randall before she died;
- the census of 1891 records Luce Addis, age 16, the daughter of Lucinda's younger sister Sarah and Henry Addis;
- Lucinda RANDALL, recorded in the 1901 census as Sulinda, another niece, was born May 26, 1891 in Zurich to Henry and Catharine Randall;
- Lucille UTTLEY, named Loucy in the 1901 census, a grand daughter, born August 18, 1893 in Zurich to William and Katherine Uttley.
